This procedure can be done as young as 6 years of age, but often a child who is a little older will do better postoperatively. The procedure takes about one hour with a local anesthetic or a general anesthetic (especially in children). Children often do better with a general anesthetic. The patient will wear a head dressing for 5-7 days. After that, the appearance is fairly normal, with full resolution of the swelling taking 6-8 weeks. Patients are usually asked to sleep in a type of head band to keep pressure on the ears for approximately three weeks.
